Mission Statement |
 |
We at Race Against Extinction are passionate about being part of the fight against extinction of our world's endangered animals; and equally passionate about the fight against climate change and the negative effects humans have had on the earth.
Specifically we are racing against the extinction of critically endangered Tigers, though education and the promotion of breeding to increase their numbers, as is done in captivity around the world. Eventually we hope to see Tigers released into safe reserves in their home countries, where they may be free of poaching and abuse.
Until then, we put our all into intensive education and awareness campaigns on the plight of Tigers and all Critically Endangered Wildlife; Tigers sub-species are all endangered or critically endangered and numbers are declining fast. (See IUCN for status). Together with Lory Park Animal and Owl Sanctuary we promote, educate and create the ripple effect of Awareness.
South Africa, with its already developed eco-tourism industry and vast expertise in conservation and game-ranging, is an excellent setting in which to educate and promote the protection of all wildlife - our own indigenous wildlife and the endangered wildlife around the world. We are, after all, a global village, and so we believe that all the countries which have the expertise and breeding success rates which we have had, should help other countries achieve the same.
There were approximately 100,000 wild Tigers a century ago.
There are less than 3,500 Tigers left worldwide in the wild today.
Of the 8 species of Tigers, 3 are already extinct:
The Bali (or Balinese) Tiger - extinct since the 1940's.
The Caspian Tiger - extinct since the 1970' s.
The Javan Tiger - extinct since the early 1980's, this is yesterday on the timeline.
Loss of habitat, Poaching for fur and/or body parts for traditional medicine, and a declining prey base due to over-hunting, are the threats to the Tiger.
The reduction in their numbers is tragic.

Race Against Extinction is now being supported by The Trust:

The Tiger Conservation Awareness campaign is a joint venture between Race Against Extinction and Lory Park Animal and Owl Sanctuary.
Students sponsored to visit the Sanctuary will have an intensive presentation on the plight of all critically endangered wildlife; they also get to see many beautiful animals up close. |
